CoW: Hiding -JR JR

Formerly known as Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., the Detroit duo of Daniel Zott and Joshua Epstein are masters of the Indie-Pop/Alternative genre, weaving some ridiculously catchy and playful tracks. Hovering around the scene since 2010, it was only around last year I came to know of this beautiful band’s existence, thanks to one of my random Apple Music scavenges.

The Catch of the Week, ‘Hiding’, starts off with a trickling and almost questioning sort of play with tones, each tone answered with a concurrent answer tone. Think of a fat owl, turning its head side to side, this would be the soundtrack to that. “If I cant have you, what am I gonna do? What am I gonna do, if I cant have you?” Its impossible to not be curious what this childish debate is about.

The verses are simple enough, with music that invites you to dip your toes into a pop shallow pit as the boys trail their voices and launch you back into an empowered frolicking gait as you realise the waters freezing. The keys are genius, subtly yet powerfully at work in the background. The chorus proves to be just as catchy, as this play with sounds shifts gears into a heightened sense of euphoria. Overall, its just a gleeful delight to listen to while driving or just walking down the street, head bopping and singing at random strangers “I, aint hiding, Iiiiiiiiii, aint hiiiding, noo mooooooore.”

And all’s well with the world.

Sing it with me here.
